AI + Offshoring: Better Together (and Why It’s Not a Threat)

The reality: AI is here — the question is how you use it

Most business owners can feel it: AI is moving from “interesting” to “inevitable.”

And whenever a new technology arrives, the same fear shows up:

“If AI can do the work, why would I build a team?”

Here’s the more accurate question:

“How do I combine AI and people so my business can grow faster — without sacrificing quality, security, or relationships?”

Because AI on its own doesn’t run a business.

People do.AI is a force multiplier — and offshoring is the capacity engine that helps you apply it consistently.

Multiple major research groups land on the same conclusion: AI changes the tasks inside jobs more than it replaces entire jobs overnight.

  • McKinsey estimates that generative AI and other technologies could automate work activities that take 60–70% of employees’ time, effectively shifting how work is done and where humans add value.
  • McKinsey also estimates an annual global productivity boost of 0.5% to 3.4% from 2023–2040 depending on adoption, with generative AI contributing meaningfully to that growth.
  • The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 forecasts that technology will both displace and create jobs by 2030 — with 170 million new jobs created and 92 million displaced (a net gain).

The direction is clear:Businesses that learn to run AI “in parallel with humans” will outpace those that wait.

AI creates speed — but it also creates new demands:

  • Someone has to set the standard
  • Someone has to validate outputs
  • Someone has to keep context and judgement
  • Someone has to communicate with customers, stakeholders, and teams

That’s where people remain essential.

Offshoring becomes powerful in the AI era because it lets you build a team that can:

  1. Operationalise AI consistently (not sporadically)
  2. Maintain human oversight (quality, nuance, accountability)
  3. Scale fast without blowing out overhead

In other words: AI accelerates work. Offshore teams sustain the acceleration.

A practical way to think about AI is to place tasks into three buckets:

1) AI-first tasks (draft, generate, summarise)

  • Drafting emails and client updates
  • Summarising meeting notes and actions
  • First-pass research and comparisons
  • Creating outlines, checklists, and templates

2) Human-led tasks (judgement, strategy, relationships)

  • Final decision-making
  • Client-facing communication
  • Negotiation and stakeholder management
  • Coaching, performance, and leadership

3) Hybrid tasks (AI creates, humans refine)

This is where most business value sits.

Examples:

  • Accounting support: AI helps draft reconciliations / narratives; humans validate and apply judgement
  • Marketing: AI generates options; humans choose the message, brand tone, and intent
  • Customer support: AI drafts responses; humans handle complex cases and escalation
  • SOP building: AI accelerates documentation; humans ensure it matches reality

This is the future: not replacement — augmentation.

Here’s a simple “AI + offshore team” operating rhythm:

  1. Define your outcomes
  • What does “good” look like? What are your standards?
  1. Build repeatable systems
  • Prompts, templates, SOPs, quality checks
  1. Assign ownership
  • Offshore team members own delivery and continuous improvement
  1. Add human QA
  • Review loops, exception handling, escalation paths
  1. Measure the impact
  • Time saved, throughput, error rate, client satisfaction

BCG’s AI at Work 2024 report found that about half of employees using GenAI report saving at least five hours per week — a strong signal that the productivity uplift is already showing up in day-to-day work. Now imagine that productivity gain applied across a small, well-managed offshore team.

The businesses that will struggle aren’t the ones with teams.

They’re the ones who:

  • Avoid AI completely
  • Use AI with no governance
  • Assume AI removes the need for people

AI without a system is chaos.AI with a team becomes leverage.

AI adoption must be paired with sensible governance.

A few best practices we recommend:

  • Use approved tools (and know where data goes)
  • Role-based access and least-privilege permissions
  • Clear rules on what can/can’t be entered into AI tools
  • Human review for anything client-facing or compliance-related
  • Audit trails for critical outputs

Deloitte’s Global Outsourcing Survey 2024 notes that organisations are increasingly combining outsourcing models with AI and data insights — and 80% of executives plan to maintain or increase investment in third‑party outsourcing, reflecting a shift toward value-based, tech-enabled delivery.

The trend isn’t “AI or outsourcing.”It’s AI with modern delivery models.

At SUMO, we don’t position AI as a replacement for people.

We position it as a tool your team can use to deliver faster, better outcomes — while keeping human judgement, relationships, and accountability at the centre.

Our job is to help you build the operating model:

  • The right roles
  • The right people
  • The right employment framework and support (HR, payroll, compliance)
  • The right structure so your offshore team and AI work together

You lead the day-to-day delivery. We make the model stable and sustainable.

AI is not going away.

But neither is the need for great people.

The businesses that win won’t be the ones who choose between AI and humans. They’ll be the ones who run them in parallel — and build teams that turn new technology into real, repeatable results.
